A hike in all weathers
We tested our PERTEX® SHIELDAIR jacket out in the field to find out how it functions in real-life outdoor conditions. Whatever the season, unforeseeable weather events can occur at any time: it may rain heavily, sudden fog may hamper vision and the wind may be so strong that you can barely move from the spot. In situations such as this, it is essential to have effective protection against the weather that not only keeps the wind and rain away but also guarantees maximum breathability.
What distinguishes the PERTEX® SHIELDAIR Jacket?
1. Breathable weather protection
The waterproof and windproof membrane has a special nanofibre structure that offers almost no resistance to moisture vapour yet provides an effective barrier to water droplets. This enables moisture from inside to evaporate with ease while rain from the outside is reliably kept at bay.
2. Practical and light in weight
PERTEX® SHIELDAIR is an extremely lightweight, fast-reacting outer material with a unique feel and outstanding qualities. Our jacket is reduced to the essentials so that we maintain full functionality while saving on weight and achieving an extremely small pack size.
3. Full freedom of movement
Our minimalist jacket has a unique silhouette and is tailored with somewhat more space for maximum freedom of movement and is designed three-dimensionally around the shoulders.

The crucial factors for me are protection against the weather and breathability. Since I often have to work outside, I need clothing and equipment that I can rely on. That’s why I always choose my outfit and equipment so that they are fully able to cope with the conditions.
The minimal weight combined with the resistance of the material is what makes the difference for me. I know a lot of other jackets that while being robust are still too heavy and bulky. Either that, or they’re very light and very quickly become damaged.
I would wear this jacket in all but the most extreme weather conditions. For me this means: cycling, bike racing, hiking, climbing and in my work as an outdoor photographer. The jacket is so compact and tough that I can basically take it with me on any job. The added bonus is that it also looks really good so that I can literally wear it on the summit of a mountain or in the city centre.

As a mountain guide and old-school mountaineer, the technical performance is by far the most important property for me. Appearance and design look good on Instagram – but what matters above all for me is the functionality on the mountain.
My PERTEX® SHIELDAIR jacket is definitely lighter, more flexible and above all significantly more breathable than my previous jackets. Not only that, the material feels softer and not so stiff. I think this pays off in a variety of activities.
I will be using the PERTEX® SHIELDAIR jacket for all outdoor activities that call for breathability and protection against the weather: when climbing in the Alps or mountaineering in changeable weather (windy, possibly rain or snow but hopefully no thunderstorms). However, the jacket is suitable for use everywhere. My wife also likes it; she’s keen to use in the city as well and when cycling to work in the rain.
