Seam Arrangement that Keeps the Baffle Three-Dimensional
A baffle is a structure that divides the inner space containing down insulation into separate sections like rooms, preventing down from moving around or gathering to maintain heat retention even. And Goldwin’s own development evolved this structure into this new box-shaped “3D Box Baffle.” The most distinctive differences from the conventional model are tucks and pleats on the baffle and baffle borders. These distinctive details bring an appropriate “room to play” to the fabric itself, allowing down insulation to maintain a three-dimensional feel without being smashed when worn.
Tightly Fits the Body, Reducing Cold Air Infiltration
The biggest advantage of using 3D Box Baffle is that it effectively reduces “cold spots.” Down jackets in general have baffles that do not follow body movements sufficiently and are likely to allow small amount of chilly air to enter the jacket because insulated down near the stitching tends to be smashed. In contrast, the 3D Box Baffle enables each baffle to remain independent and fluffy, so the fabric can freely form to fit the skin surface tightly without gaps. And this reduces cold spots and further improves heat retention. As evidence, heat retention tests prove that 3D Box Baffle's heat retention rate is 7% higher than that of a normal stitch baffle.
Efficient and Improved Heat Retention with Less Down
The key to improving the heat retention of outerwear is the ability to block outside air and create "dead air" between the fabric and the skin. As mentioned above, 3D Box Baffle has a structure in which the baffle is formed three-dimensionally by special tuck stitching and pleat stitching, so it is possible to maintain the volume with a smaller amount of down filling and expand the dead air space. This also makes the jacket itself lighter and reduces the negative impact on the natural environment.
This season, Goldwin is implementing 3D Box Baffle onto a variety of down jackets across categories, from lifestyle items to expedition-spec ski wear. And Goldwin will continue to use this technology as the core of its down wear development.
